Google launches Operation Blue Skies contrail avoidance trial
601BGoogle, working with UK partners including NATS, Imperial College London, and the Met Office, announced Operation Blue Skies, the world's first state-backed trial to reduce contrails at scale. The 30-month program will operate in the Shanwick airspace of the eastern North Atlantic corridor, which accounts for approximately 5% of global contrail warming. AI-powered forecasts will enable slight flight deviations to avoid contrail-sensitive regions, with around 10,000 flights per year passing through the trial area. The program is co-funded by industry partners and the UK Department for Transport.
