TUM opens Center for Organoid Systems on Garching campus

The Technical University of Munich has opened the Center for Organoid Systems (COS) on its Garching campus, a new biotechnology research center that strengthens the Munich Institute for Biomedical Engineering. The center studies organoids—three-dimensional structures grown from stem cells or human tissue that reproduce organ functions with high precision—to generate insights into diseases such as diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease and develop new therapies. Nine research groups at COS currently study different organoid types, including pancreatic, liver, and brain organoids, with a focus on developing organoid-based disease models for personalized medicine. The center's new building, funded with over 40 million Euros, includes advanced technical infrastructure such as a laboratory robot funded by the Heinz Nixdorf Foundation for high-throughput organoid production.
