KIT and Fraunhofer develop XR assistance system for visually impaired workers
Researchers from KIT and the Fraunhofer Institute for Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation are developing an assistance system using extended-reality glasses and artificial intelligence to support visually impaired workers. The system, called AssistiveXR4Work, automatically recognizes and magnifies visual information, displays text with high contrast, reads content aloud, and helps with orientation in work environments. The project is designed to help skilled workers maintain their careers despite vision impairment and address workforce shortages. The Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs is funding the project with approximately €1.5 million, with plans to construct an operational demonstrator within four years.
