
KIT launches optical computing test system for faster AI
The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology has begun operating a test system for optical computing that uses light instead of electrical signals to process information. The photonic processors are designed to augment traditional supercomputers and make artificial intelligence and other high-demand computing applications faster and more energy-efficient. Researchers at KIT are investigating how to integrate the optical processors as accelerators into existing computing infrastructures and combine them with classical and quantum computers. Germany's Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space funded the development with approximately EUR 4.3 million, and the hardware was developed and produced by Q.ANT, a Stuttgart-based company.
