Climate change affects crop yields differently based on pollinator dependence
Researchers at the Technical University of Munich analyzed crop yields over 35 years in Lower Franconia and Upper Bavaria and found that climate change impacts vary by crop type depending on insect pollination reliance. Wheat yields are declining because temperatures exceed the plant's optimal levels, causing smaller grains, while fruit trees like apples have not yet suffered yield losses and have benefited from warmer temperatures reducing late-frost damage to blossoms. However, researchers note that pollinator-dependent crops will face dual stress if warming continues: the plants will exceed their optimal conditions and produce smaller, less attractive flowers, while the pollinators themselves will also be affected by changing temperatures. The study suggests that climate adaptation strategies should combine crop-specific measures with targeted pollinator support, including flowering areas, hedgerows, diverse crop rotations, and reduced pesticide use.
