Cambridge researchers awarded ARIA funding for protein manufacturing projects
Cambridge researchers have been awarded funding as part of ARIA's Universal Fabricators Programme, a three-year, £50 million programme supporting 11 research teams. Professor Ronan Daly leads the 'Protein SPARK' project, which will use designed proteins to grow magnets without rare-earth elements and develop advanced battery electrodes, employing a 'Droplet Lego' method inspired by biomineralisation. Cambridge researchers are also involved in two other projects in the programme: the POEM project, which aims to use specially designed proteins to control magnetic crystal growth and arrangement, and the S-LATTICE project, which combines self-assembling proteins with metals to create customised ordered sheets for filtration, carbon dioxide conversion, catalysis, and light-interactive applications.
