Physicists solve 40-year-old magnetic monopole paradox

Researchers from the University of Cambridge, Ghent University, and the University of Oxford published findings in Nature Physics showing that a quantum particle crossing a duality defect—a boundary between order and disorder—always passes through rather than being reflected, but emerges transformed into a nonlocal object, a particle attached to an invisible string stretching back to the defect. Using a spin chain model, the team fired quantum wave packets at a duality defect and found that the particle's re-emerged state is no longer an ordinary particle. The researchers determined that the duality defect carries a hidden quantum space that dictates both the perfect transmission and the particle's new identity.
