
Cancer cells release antioxidants to evade immune attack
Researchers from the University of Cambridge and Oregon Health & Science University discovered that cancer cells release the antioxidant protein Peroxiredoxin 1 (PRDX1) to suppress T cell activation, according to findings published in Science. The team found that removing cancer cells' capacity to produce PRDX1 enhanced immune-cell activity and limited tumor growth in mice, and that human cancers also release PRDX1 using the same mechanism. When the researchers blocked this process, tumors that did not respond to certain immunotherapies began responding to treatment, suggesting this pathway may be a therapeutic target.
