ESA and IAU sign agreement to protect dark skies from satellites

The European Space Agency and the International Astronomical Union's Centre for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky have signed a Memorandum of Intent to develop technical solutions addressing satellite interference with astronomy. Growing satellite constellations create unintended impacts including reflected light that disrupts telescope observations and radio emissions that interfere with radio telescopes. ESA will contribute technical expertise and engage with industry to develop practical solutions such as darker spacecraft surfaces, radio-quiet electronics, and models to predict satellite visibility from Earth.
