TUM researchers develop satellite method for coastal water level monitoring

Researchers at the Technical University of Munich and the University of Oxford have developed a new method that uses satellite imagery to measure tidal levels by analyzing the visible waterline and beach slope, achieving accuracy to within 100 meters—a 100-fold improvement over previous satellite methods. Testing on a New Zealand beach revealed tidal differences of up to one meter across a 90-kilometer stretch of coastline. The method, which uses NASA Landsat data spanning over forty years, could improve coastal protection and navigation in regions lacking tide gauge stations, particularly in parts of Africa and Southeast Asia.
